Trial of Chairman Mao: Witness Question Sheet
Directions: You as a witness are to write four questions and answers in the perspective of your character using the book as a reference. You should find passages from the novel in support of Chairman Mao OR evidence against him depending the side of the case you are representing. Remember to USE page numbers and POST these questions on your blog. Lawyers, use this document to create cross-examination questions. Two per character should be sufficient.
Character: Chang Hong - Student Name: Eva van Veen
1. Question: Why wouldn't you put your family before Chairman Mao?
Answer: Because even though my brother has epilepsy, needs help dressing and eating, and might not live beyond his teens, I can't stay home with him. I'm a Red Guard Committee Member, and it's my duty to follow Chairman Mao, and help China. I can't allow personal matters to interfere with my revolutionary duties. This was said on pages 204/205.
2. Question: Why do you support Chairman Mao?
Answer: In order for China to become a 'new', great society, where people are equal, and everything is shared. But for this to happen, we need a leader, and the greatest leader we could have is our Chairman Mao. We need to follow him to move forward and accomplish a better China for everyone. It's said on pages 166/167, 202-205, and 232/233.
3. Question: How did you feel about having to do summer labour?
Answer: It would help us know what the farmers had to endure, and it was part of our education. But most importantly is that Chairman Mao told us to, and to follow him means to help China grow and become greater; and we'd be part of the group that provides food for so many people. Pages 232/233.
4. Question: Why do you still try to help Ji-Li, after she showed a few times she'd choose her family over Mao?
Answer: Even if Ji-Li made some mistakes, she can still remould herself and choose to follow Chairman Mao instead. There is no difficulty, no matter how serious, that cannot be overcome, like said on page 233, and it's not her fault she was born into a black family. She's still an educable child, and can choose her own future. I don't want Ji-Li to ruin her life by not thinking about her political life, which is why I try to help her. She still has a chance. Pages 232/233.

Flex Day
Answer one of the above questions and add two points of observation or reflection from the day abouts the two places we visited (Sterling Styles factory and Up2Date apparel office). Also you can compose a question that you may have from our flex day adventures. You should post these three items on your blog page.
1) answer a question
2) make two observations or reflections (or write your own questions that you may have) Three things in total!
3.On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the top score, how would you rate the quality of the work environment you saw here, and why?
On a scale of 1-10 I would rate the quality of the work environment as an 8. Everything was clean, the workers had enough space, the machinery looked quite safe, and the factory managers made sure the workers were looked after; there was a child care centre for workers who couldn't leave their children at home, and a lot of people, though not all, had cloth in front of their mouths for safety. The lighting was good, but a bit too bright, and there was ventilation. Overall it was a good working environment, but not the best ever.
Two points of observation:
1. There were signs put up in the factory reminding the workers to wear their gloves when using certain machines, and also to wear that cloth in front of your mouth. I thought that was a good idea, so the people are safe.
2. The workers all ranged in age from about 20 to 50/60, there were no children working. This made me quite happy since I hate it when I have to see people my age working, while they deserve an education, and since it's illegal it's good to see they do follow laws...

Elliot's Expose
Blog response instructions:
• Answer the questions in complete sentences and use proper English (restrain from using MSN chat style of writing).
• Use evidence from the novel to support your answer and include page numbers.
• When commenting to your peers, be respectful in your language and about their responses. It is okay to disagree, but do it in a polite manner.
When Elliot writes about his experience with the Jock Rots and sends it out over the KidNet, he includes the following quote in his letter."I think people ought to realize that stuff like this goes on every day…The rest of you are all part of it-because you let it go on and maybe you think it's funny, or you think it only happens to geeky outsiders and kids who are smaller or fatter or skinnier or don't have so many friends or so much money as you. So tell me-what happens when you don't have so many friends one day, or you don't have so much money, or something bad happens to you?" (91-92)
Blog Question:What is the message is he trying to get across to his classmates? (6pts)
Two Peer Responses (4 pts)
The message Elliot is trying to get across to his classmates is that anyone can get bullied. It's not a person's own fault if they're small or skinny or don't have a lot of friends, and one day you could become skinny or without friends, and you'll be picked on. People should not ignore the bullying going on, because the bully can easily turn from the outsider to you. Also, people should realise it's not as funny as it seems, and stop it. Bullies shoud care a bit more about how their victims might feel, and what can happen when it gets out of hand, like on page 56-59, when the Jock Rots drop Elliot off the bridge. It's not right to hurt people unnecessarily. The students that aren't with the crowd aren't people who deserve this kind of treatment; it's not punishable for being an outsider. So what Elliot is trying to say is that one day you might be with the crowd, the next day you're not and you could be a victim. Stop bullying and don't pretend it doesn't happen; care about other people's feelings and see the wrong in hurting people.

Blog: Role Reversal
Blog Question: After the Bully Lab was renamed, the Revealers, and the stories of the three Darkland students were released and well received by the student body, Elliot wanted to publish Russell’s narrative about Richie punching Russell in the face.
1) Why was Russell so opposed to the idea (pg. 110)? Explain. (4 pts)
2) What is happening to the relationship between Russell and Richie. (3 pts)
3) Two Peer Comments (4 pts each)
Blog Answer:
1. Russell didn't want to post his story about Richie punching him, because Richie had been acting differently, nicer. Russell probably thought they were more of friends now; he was allowed to ask questions, as he said on page 99; and publishing the story might ruin it all(he's probably a bit scared to get hurt, too). Also, I don't think he wanted everyone to know about his problems with Richie, since even if he sent it in anonymous, people could guess who he is.
2. Between Russell and Richie, it's going better now. Richie isn't bullying him badly now or anything, and Russell is allowed to ask him things. He also sort of stood up for Russell when Burke and Blanchette were threatening him (as on page 97), and Richie has gained a bit of respect for Russell, because he dared to talk back. They're becoming more of friends, and I think Richie would, say, protect Russell, because he's Richie's victim, and he wants Russell to learn to stand up for himself.

Me!
Hi!
My name is Eva, and I'm from Holland and England. I live in Bangladesh, which is a country somewhere in Asia that is very crowded and quite poor. I go to the American International School, Dhaka (AIS-D). My favourite subjects in school are Band, P.E, and Social Studies/Language Arts. I love music, it's my life! Some of the bands I listen to are Children of Bodom, Korn, Breaking Benjamin, 12 stones and Bullet for my Valentine. I also like reading horror, mystery and realistic books, though less than before. On weekends I like to hang around with my friends or go swimming at the Dutch club, and of course listen to music or read. Red and black are my favourite colours, and snakes my favourite animal. Hope you'll enjoy my blog!
